EDWARD HILL (1843-1923)

Artist Edward Hill was born in Wolverhampton, England on Dec. 9, 1843. Hill was brought to the U.S. by his family in 1844 and was raised in Taunton, MA. His art career was spent mainly in Boston and the New Hampshire towns of Lancaster, Littlejohn, and Nashua.

Hill was a prolific artist as well as a published poet, songwriter, and newspaper correspondent. His paintings include White Mountain landscapes, southern genre scenes, still lifesportraits, portraits of American Indians, and Western scenery.

A constant traveler, Hill made painting trips to San Francisco, Portland, Denver and Seattle. While in San Francisco, he shared a studio with his brother Thomas Hill and painted many California landscapes. Hill was artist-in-residence at the Flume House in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in 1894 and during the early 1920s he had a studio in Los Angeles.
