ANAK AGUNG GEDE SOBRAT (Indonesian, 1911-1992).

Anak Agung Gede Sobrat first learned to make wayangkulit -- leather puppets -- from his grandfather. As a young man he became a member of the "Pita Maha" group. As a member of that group he was instructed in Western art techniques by Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet. Considered a pioneering Balinese modern artist, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Yoguakarta in Java from 1957 to 1959. His best known works include images of Balinese dance, market scenes and village life.

Sobrat's works can be found in the collections of the Puri Lukisan Museum, The Neka Museum in Ubud, and the Museum of Folk Art, Leiden. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Singapore Art Museum in 1994.
